Your Florida Backyard NSiS Home Page Your Florida Backyard Mockingbirds & Thrashers
The Mockingbird is the state bird. It can imitate the songs of other birds as well as other sounds. Males sometimes sing during the night. Brown Thrashers and Catbirds, whose call sounds like a cat's mew, also mimic other birds' calls.

Mockingbirds and Catbirds forage the ground and in foliage and brush piles. Brown Thrashers forage in leaf litter. All feed on insects and fruit and may visit feeders when food is in short supply. None use nest boxes.
